On September 24, reports surfaced indicating that China has initiated full-scale operations for its inaugural large-scale project employing 18 MW offshore wind turbines. This marks a significant stride in China's pursuit of offshore wind power with enhanced capacity and reduced costs. The CGN Guangdong Yangjiang Fanshi 2 GW offshore wind power project is divided into two 1 GW sub-projects, incorporating a total of 33 ultra-large 18 MW offshore wind turbines. These turbines boast the largest single-unit capacity currently being mass-deployed within the country.
Sporting a rotor diameter of 292 meters and a swept area covering approximately 66,000 square meters—equivalent to the expanse of nine standard football fields—the widespread adoption of these turbines enables a reduction in the number of turbine installations needed. Consequently, this leads to cost savings in submarine cable installation, offshore foundation construction, and sea area utilization.
