Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) rolled out a pilot program, handpicking 11 cutting-edge nuclear reactor projects for inclusion, in line with an executive order issued by Trump in May. These projects will be set up beyond the confines of national laboratories. The program's core objective is to put the DOE's reactor review and authorization protocols to the test in commercial settings. The ambition is to see at least three experimental reactors built, operational, and reaching criticality under the DOE's authorization banner by July 4, 2026. While the chosen companies are on the hook for covering their respective costs, being part of the program opens doors to private funding opportunities and offers a streamlined path for upcoming commercial license applications.
