On January 13, the United Kingdom unveiled plans to leverage nuclear energy for the construction of AI data centers, with Culham, the site of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, identified as the initial location. To facilitate this ambitious project, the UK government intends to establish an energy commission dedicated to exploring the implementation of small modular reactors. These reactors, employing nuclear fission technology, aim to provide power to data centers. The Vantage data center has committed to investing over £12 billion (approximately $14.6 billion) in this groundbreaking initiative. Additionally, Nscale has announced plans to invest $2.5 billion over the next three years. Despite the Labour Party's recognition of AI as a cornerstone of its economic strategy, progress in policy implementation has been sluggish, leading to criticism for inconsistent messaging.
