US chipmaker GlobalFoundries announced on Tuesday that it has reached a final agreement with the R&D office of the US Department of Commerce's CHIPS Act, securing $375 million in R&D funding aimed at accelerating the development of its quantum technology solutions business. Almost simultaneously, shares of three emerging US-based quantum computing companies—Rigetti Computing, D-Wave Quantum, and Quantinuum—surged significantly, with increases of nearly 10%, nearly 10%, and over 5%, respectively. These three companies also announced on Tuesday that they have signed final agreements with the US Department of Commerce, collectively receiving $100 million in funding to accelerate R&D projects aimed at addressing key technical challenges in the large-scale expansion and development of superconducting quantum computers.
