On July 31st, developer Pongsakorn Wichit made an exciting announcement: the world's smallest GPU chip, TinyGPU v2.0, has successfully cleared real-world testing hurdles. This diminutive marvel is a key component of the Tiny Tapeout SKY 25b tape-out project, packing approximately 240,000 transistors into its compact frame. It flaunts impressive graphics processing capabilities, including 4-bit double buffering and 8-bit depth buffering, which empower it to handle essential graphics tasks like transformation, lighting, and rasterization with ease. The screen can display up to 1,000 triangles simultaneously and supports a single dynamic directional light source, along with flat shading for enhanced visual effects.

During the testing phase, TinyGPU v2.0 wowed audiences with two captivating demonstrations. The first showcased real-time controller manipulation of a low-polygon model, allowing users to interact with and manipulate the model on the fly. The second demonstration featured a scalable and rotatable colored globe model, demonstrating the chip's ability to handle complex graphical elements with finesse. On a Basys3 FPGA host, the test frame rate soared to an impressive 7.5 to 15 FPS, proving the chip's prowess in real-world scenarios.

Interestingly, even before the completion of v2.0's testing, the team had already submitted TinyGPU v3.0 for the next round of tape-out projects. This new iteration incorporates a programmable pixel shader, meticulously designed with reference to the DirectX 8 PS 1.1 standard. It supports SIMD parallel processing of 4 pixels, ensuring efficient and high-speed graphics rendering. Each shader is packed with 31 instructions, featuring an instruction set that encompasses 26 types of operations. It implements branching through mask execution and is equipped with 4 8-bit temporary registers, further enhancing its graphical processing capabilities.
