Generative AI chips are gobbling up a substantial share of the world's memory production capacity. In response, Apple has announced price increases across a range of its products, a step widely viewed as unavoidable. At present, Apple is grappling not only with rising costs but also with concerns that shipments of its flagship products, such as the iPhone, could be disrupted by a shortage of DRAM. To mitigate this risk, Apple has recently engaged in lobbying efforts with the U.S. government, seeking approval to procure DRAM from CXMT, a Chinese memory manufacturer currently on a U.S. blacklist. However, analysts caution that even if Apple were to incorporate CXMT into its supply chain, it is unlikely to significantly ease the overall strain on prices and supply. Apple's primary objective, they argue, is to minimize the potential for severe memory shortages in the future.
