During a research interview, Jin Hongguo, the Deputy General Manager and Board Secretary of Yunnan Germanium Industry, revealed that the escalating global demand for satellite networking has triggered a significant upsurge in the need for space solar cells. This, in turn, has fueled a steady increase in the global utilization of solar germanium wafers.
The company's offerings in material-grade germanium encompass germanium ingots and germanium dioxide. Its range of deep-processed products includes photovoltaic, infrared, and fiber-optic grade germanium products, along with compound semiconductor materials. These products find extensive applications across diverse sectors.
Specifically, the photovoltaic products mainly consist of germanium single-crystal wafers tailored for solar cells, which are predominantly employed in space equipment like satellites. At present, the company's annual production capacity for photovoltaic-grade germanium products, particularly solar germanium wafers, is 300,000 pieces for 4-inch wafers and 200,000 pieces for 6-inch wafers.
In March 2025, the company is set to commence the 'Germanium Wafer Construction Project for Space Solar Cells,' which will span 18 months. It is projected that by the end of 2025, the production capacity will soar to 1.25 million pieces annually. Once the entire project is finalized, the capacity is expected to reach 2.5 million pieces per year, with a phased increase in capacity over this period.
