The AI programming tool startup Windsurf saw a whirlwind of acquisition bids unfold over a mere 72 hours. Initially, OpenAI tabled a $3 billion offer to acquire Windsurf, but the deal ultimately fell apart. Shortly thereafter, Google's DeepMind swooped in, poaching Windsurf's core team for $2.4 billion. Almost immediately, Cognition, a company founded by Chinese entrepreneurs, acted swiftly to secure Windsurf's remaining team, products, and intellectual property. Windsurf, which generates an annual revenue of $82 million and boasts over 350 enterprise customers, stands as a testament to its significant market presence.
Cognition intends to deeply integrate Windsurf's intelligent integrated development environment (IDE) with its own AI programming assistant, Devin, with the goal of offering an even more streamlined and efficient development experience. This acquisition underscores the intensifying competition for top talent and cutting-edge technology within the AI industry.
