According to Bloomberg, Abdulrahman Alfozan, the arrested engineer at the center of the OpenAI eavesdropping case, has requested to be released from custody, denying that purchasing a one-way ticket back to Saudi Arabia was an attempt to evade legal prosecution. His lawyer stated that Alfozan habitually buys one-way tickets first before booking a return flight, and that this travel plan was made well before the investigation. On October 9, 2026, Alfozan was arrested by the FBI after OpenAI employees discovered concealed recording devices in an executive conference room, leading to his dismissal. The U.S. Department of Justice has accused him of illegally intercepting oral communications, which could result in a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
