According to Gizmodo, social media behemoth Meta has revised the service terms for Meta Business Suite business accounts, with the updated regulations slated to officially come into force on October 30, 2026. Under the new terms, any business utilizing Meta business accounts for advertising, store management, and other services is considered to have implicitly agreed to allow Meta to employ crawlers to scrape publicly accessible web content from their official websites for the purpose of training Meta’s AI large models. This provision has triggered substantial controversy within the industry, as businesses that open commercial accounts on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram automatically confer upon Meta the right to scrape publicly available content from their websites without offering a distinct opt-out option. Even if a business website employs robots.txt rules to block web crawlers, it cannot thwart content collection authorized under the commercial account agreement. Legal experts have highlighted that this maneuver could enable Meta to circumvent the standard copyright negotiation process, potentially infringing upon the rights and interests of content providers.
