OpenAI has recently adopted a trio of cautious strategies: halting the rollout of its latest flagship model, GPT-6.1 Astra, due to its failure to meet internal safety benchmarks; delaying its initial public offering (IPO) plans; and openly endorsing efforts to decelerate the pace of pioneering AI research and development within the industry. In parallel, the company is engaged in discussions for a substantial $30 billion funding round, with a pre-investment valuation set at $1.4 trillion. Notably, its annualized revenue for the previous quarter witnessed a remarkable surge of over 70% compared to the same period last year, nearing the $70 billion mark.

Its rival, Anthropic, has taken a contrasting approach by expediting its entry into the public markets. In its prospectus, Anthropic acknowledges that AI presents existential risks, yet it is willing to embrace these in pursuit of liquidity and legitimacy, while also subjecting itself to performance evaluations. Conversely, OpenAI has chosen to remain a privately-held entity, thereby sidestepping the immediate pressures for growth and the obligation to disclose information. This strategy affords OpenAI greater flexibility to make adjustments and address concerns related to technological safety.
