On July 2, The Information reported, citing three sources, that Anthropic has initiated the early-stage development of its proprietary AI chips and is engaged in discussions with Samsung Electronics for a potential foundry partnership. This strategic move is designed to gain greater control over the costly computing infrastructure that underpins its AI model operations, mirroring a similar strategy employed by its competitor, OpenAI. Notably, tech giants like Google and Amazon Web Services have already successfully developed their own custom chips, while Meta and Microsoft have also ventured into the realm of in-house chip design. In 2024, OpenAI teamed up with Broadcom to craft its own chips, unveiling its first jointly developed product, Jalapeño, just last month.
At present, Anthropic is still refining the positioning, functionality, performance, and integration methods of its chips. The company has been in talks with several chip design firms but has yet to delve into the detailed design, testing, and manufacturing stages. Anthropic is contemplating the adoption of Samsung's cutting-edge 2-nanometer manufacturing process and advanced packaging technology to bring its vision to life.
