US-based California nuclear energy startup Valar Atomic Power Company has successfully powered NVIDIA's AI chips using its Ward 250 reactor, marking the first application of its kind for a next-generation reactor in the United States. On Wednesday, the company conducted a demonstration test at its Utah facility, connecting the reactor to NVIDIA's Blackwell chips and temporarily operating a website. At the same time, it announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to build a small-scale data center in Utah to verify that AI computing facilities can reduce reliance on external power grids and water resources through advanced nuclear energy and closed-loop liquid cooling technologies. The reactor reached criticality last month, initiating a self-sustaining chain fission reaction. Currently, a number of companies are investing in the development of next-generation nuclear energy technologies. These new reactors utilize entirely new materials and design concepts to enhance safety and operational efficiency. However, the industry is still in its early stages, and no advanced reactors have yet been commercially deployed in the United States.
