On March 20, 2026, news surfaced that Liao Yixian, the co-founder of Super Micro Computer in the United States, faced indictment in New York. He was accused of colluding with both internal and external associates to illicitly transship high-performance AI servers, which contained restricted GPUs, to mainland China. This was done via intermediary firms in Southeast Asia, in a bid to sidestep U.S. export control regulations. The cumulative value of the servers implicated in this case soared to a staggering $2.5 billion, with illegal transshipments alone totaling $510 million from late April to mid-May 2025. Presently, Liao Yixian and an external contractor, Sun Tingwei, have been apprehended, while Zhang Ruicang, the sales manager for the Taiwan region, is still at large. Super Micro Computer clarified that it has not been implicated in any charges and has promptly suspended the employees involved, severing ties with them. As a result of these developments, Super Micro Computer's U.S. stock plummeted nearly 12% in after-hours trading.
