Apple’s App Store Imposes Silent Restrictions on Updates for Popular ‘Atmosphere Programming’ Apps

Apple has recently, and without much fanfare, mandated that several AI-powered ‘atmosphere programming’ applications, including Replit and Vibecode, halt the release of updates through the App Store until they make necessary adjustments to certain functionalities. The rationale behind this move is that some features of these apps contravene the App Store’s longstanding review guidelines, which explicitly prohibit apps from executing code that modifies their own functionality or that of other applications. These ‘atmosphere programming’ tools empower ordinary users to create apps or websites using natural language prompts, offering an exceptionally low barrier to entry. Consequently, they have swiftly gained traction among both developers and non-technical users alike. Apple clarified that this policy is not specifically aimed at such applications. However, developers will be required to modify how their app’s content is presented or eliminate certain features before updated versions can receive approval. For instance, if Replit were to adjust its functionality to open generated apps in an external browser rather than an in-app web view, the chances of its new version being approved would substantially increase. Similarly, if Vibecode were to remove its software generation capabilities tailored specifically for Apple devices, its updated version would likely gain approval. Industry insiders have expressed concerns that if similar restrictions continue to be enforced, the product form and commercial prospects of atmosphere programming apps may be compelled to undergo significant transformations.
