In February, ByteDance made the strategic decision to halt the Doubao AI glasses project, at least refraining from designating it as a primary focus for near-term development. Prior to this, speculation had been rife about the imminent launch of the product; however, officials involved have clarified that no concrete sales blueprint was ever in place. Initially envisioned as a 'next-generation portal,' ByteDance now acknowledges, from an internal perspective, that the AI glasses market is already dominated by established players. This saturation makes it challenging for new entrants to carve out a distinct identity based solely on hardware innovation. Furthermore, the screenless variant of the glasses essentially replicates the functionality of Bluetooth headsets, while the version equipped with a display offers little that sets it apart from other AI glasses on the market, resulting in a lack of distinctiveness in the user experience.
ByteDance's overarching hardware strategy revolves around identifying practical use cases for its Doubao large-scale model. However, if the glasses fail to foster habitual, high-frequency usage among consumers, they cannot fulfill their intended role as a 'portal.' Consequently, the project has been put on hold, though the competition to dominate the portal space remains fierce.
