Amazon security warned that a Russian-speaking hacker launched large-scale attacks on Fortinet FortiGate firewalls using generative AI services over five weeks, compromising over 600 devices across 55 countries. The hacker exploited weak security links, such as simple login credentials or single-factor authentication, to quickly breach the firewalls and further infiltrate some victims' networks, suspectedly in preparation for ransomware attacks. Amazon stated that such intrusions, driven by profit motives, are the latest example of hackers leveraging AI to simplify and accelerate cyberattacks.
