Microsoft is reducing its reliance on OpenAI by building its own models to achieve self-sufficiency in the AI field. Mustafa Suleyman, head of Microsoft's Consumer AI division, stated that this strategic shift was made following the restructuring of their relationship in October 2025. Microsoft will invest approximately $80 billion in the 2025 fiscal year to build AI-driven data centers and related hardware, and has launched self-developed models such as MAI-1-preview. Microsoft is also leveraging the access gained through its partnership with OpenAI to accelerate the development of its own AI chips. This move has prompted Microsoft to start independently building its most advanced technologies, reducing reliance on external partners.
