Meta's Superintelligence Lab, which was set up in July of this year under the leadership of Alexandr Wang, has a workforce of roughly 3,000 individuals. Its primary mission is to expedite research and development in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Recently, Meta disclosed that it would be laying off around 600 employees from the lab. This move is part of a broader strategy to streamline departmental frameworks, solidify Alexandr Wang's authority over AI strategy, minimize management tiers, and boost operational efficiency. Additionally, it aims to tackle organizational inefficiencies and accelerate the development of AI products. Notably, the TBD department, which oversees superintelligence R&D and the management of Meta's large language models, remained untouched by these layoffs. In fact, this department managed to attract several top-tier AI talents over the summer. The layoffs predominantly affected staff in the FAIR department, the product division, and the infrastructure team. Meta has expressed its intention to assist affected employees in finding alternative roles within the company. Chinese AI scientist Tian Yuandong has verified that he and several members of his team were impacted by the layoffs. In response, Meta offered him an eight-month salary package as compensation. Presently, Tian Yuandong is actively exploring job opportunities outside the company.
