As U.S. President Trump prepared for his scheduled visit to Asia, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that trade negotiations between Malaysia and the United States were on the verge of reaching a conclusion. During a media briefing on Wednesday evening, Anwar disclosed that a staggering 99.9% of the negotiation process had been finalized. The few remaining matters are slated to be deliberated upon at a cabinet meeting set for Friday.
This year in August, Malaysia and the United States struck a deal to slash the tariffs imposed on Malaysian exports bound for the U.S., bringing them down from 25% to 19%. Anwar characterized the negotiations as "arduous," noting that they encompassed a wide array of industries, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and the energy sector.
