OpenAI, in partnership with a university research team, has published the report titled "How People Use ChatGPT." This report sheds light on the real-world usage patterns of ChatGPT since its launch at the close of 2022. By July 2025, ChatGPT has amassed over 700 million weekly active users, representing 10% of the global adult population. Its adoption rate has outstripped that of both the internet and smartphones in their early stages.

There has been a notable surge in the volume of user messages exchanged on the platform, accompanied by a shift in their composition. The user base has seen an uptick in the representation of female users, middle-aged and elderly users, as well as individuals from low- and middle-income countries.

Interestingly, over 70% of the conversations on ChatGPT are not work-related. Common themes among these non-work interactions include seeking practical advice, querying information, and engaging in writing activities. Educational scenarios stand out as particularly prominent, while within work-related contexts, writing emerges as the most prevalent need.

From the standpoint of user intent, inquiry-based messages constitute nearly half of all interactions and are experiencing rapid growth. Nearly 60% of work-related messages revolve around obtaining recorded explanatory information, seeking decision-making consultations, problem-solving, and fostering creative thinking.

The report distills eight core findings, emphasizing ChatGPT's significant economic ramifications and its profound influence on reshaping human life and thinking patterns.
