Next week, Waymo, the autonomous driving subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet, will embark on its maiden international public road test in Tokyo, Japan. This endeavor signifies a pivotal advancement for Waymo's technology in its quest to penetrate the global market. While the decision on whether to launch commercial services in Japan remains pending, the company views this test as a significant milestone. The primary objective of the test is to gather data on Japan's unique driving environment, particularly focusing on left-hand driving and densely populated urban traffic conditions. Waymo will deploy approximately 25 autonomous vehicles, which will initially be manually operated by drivers from Japanese taxi companies to collect crucial mapping data. The testing will take place across seven central Tokyo districts.
