Volkswagen announces its intention to unveil the next-generation Golf (MK9) in 2029, marking a significant shift towards electrification. This milestone model will leverage a cutting-edge electric architecture jointly developed with Rivian, and will exclusively be available as a pure electric vehicle, complementing the existing MK8 Golf lineup. The Volkswagen Group has dedicated $5.8 billion to the development of this innovative architecture, aiming to streamline systems, minimize the number of control units, and adopt a modular design for heightened flexibility. The electric ID.1 will be the pioneering model to feature this architecture, paving the way for the MK9 Golf (or potentially rebranded as ID.Golf). The new platform embraces OTA (Over-The-Air) updates and can be tailored with diverse chip systems to cater to model-specific needs. Manufacturing of the MK9 Golf will take place at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant in Germany, while production of the MK8 Golf shifts to the Puebla facility in Mexico.
