On October 21, He Xiaopeng, the Chairman of XPENG Group, put forth a proposition at the World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference, suggesting that the development of autonomous driving should leapfrog Level 3. He underscored that while Level 3 autonomous driving shifts the safety responsibility onto the system, there has been no significant enhancement in either user experience or safety levels. He Xiaopeng is of the opinion that the criteria for Level 5 autonomous driving will undergo a transformation in the future. He pointed out that traditional automotive autonomous driving operates in a passive manner, whereas robots are required to proactively execute tasks around the clock. The previous definition of Level 5 was solely grounded in technical aspects, neglecting to fully account for safety and the controllability of different scenarios. He stressed that for regulatory frameworks across various countries to effectively oversee autonomous driving and foster technological advancements, safety and controllability must be prioritized. Based on this rationale, he posited that the future growth prospects in the autonomous driving sector rest with Level 2, Level 4, and the newly defined Level 5, whereas Level 3 merely represents an upgraded version of Level 2.
