According to Electrek, the latest research conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reveals that Waymo’s autonomous taxis have an accident rate 68% lower than that of human-driven vehicles, with incidents being less severe on average. This study analyzed federal accident report data from Waymo’s operations across four cities between 2021 and 2024, encompassing approximately 50 million miles of autonomous driving. This marks the first systematic safety evaluation of large-scale autonomous driving operational data carried out by an independent organization.
