Amazon's autonomous driving subsidiary, Zoox, has declared a comprehensive recall of all 105 of its self-driving taxis. The recall was necessitated by a critical flaw in the vehicles' autonomous driving software, which failed to accurately detect thick smoke at fire scenes, thereby increasing the likelihood of inadvertently entering rescue zones. This decision followed an incident on June 20th, where a Zoox taxi, amidst dense smoke, inadvertently drove into an unobstructed fire scene before executing an emergency stop and being redirected by a remote operator. In response, Zoox has promptly issued an over-the-air (OTA) software update to bolster the system's proficiency in recognizing and reacting to thick smoke, with the update successfully implemented on July 15th.
