Samsung SDI is currently in the process of revamping the battery production lines at its StarPlus Energy joint venture with Stellantis, situated in Kokomo, Indiana. Of the four production lines at the facility, three are slated for conversion to cater to ESS (Energy Storage System) requirements. Specifically, the inaugural NCA ESS production line initiated operations in October 2025; the second production line, dedicated to 200Ah LFP ESS, is set to commence operations within the current year to support Samsung's proprietary energy storage systems; and the third line, designed for Tesla's Megapack and featuring 300Ah lithium iron phosphate ESS batteries, is anticipated to commence production in the second quarter of 2027. Industry insiders suggest that Tesla is likely the main customer for the undisclosed order revealed by Samsung SDI earlier this year, with a contract value estimated to range between RMB 13.56 billion and RMB 22.6 billion. Previously, Tesla had chosen LG Energy Solution's Lansing plant in Michigan as its primary supply hub for Megapack batteries within the United States.
