On June 28, reports emerged that, commencing July 1, China is set to roll out a series of new national standards concerning vehicle safety collisions. Notably, the standard for "Occupant Protection in Vehicle Side Impacts" is poised for its most rigorous enhancement in almost twenty years. Insights from experts at the Vehicle Safety Laboratory of the China Automotive Technology and Research Center reveal that the new national standard will elevate the mass of the side-impact trolley from 950 kilograms to 1400 kilograms. Furthermore, beginning July 1, two compulsory national standards—the "Safety Requirements for Electric Vehicles" and the "Safety Requirements for Traction Batteries Used in Electric Vehicles"—will also officially come into force. These new standards elevate the benchmarks for identifying thermal runaway in power batteries to "no fire, no explosion," and, for the first time, specify "one-touch power-off" as a physical power-off mechanism, supplanting the prior software-controlled approach.
