On April 10, 2026, U.S. Trade Representative Greer announced that the Trump administration currently harbors no plans to modify the restrictions imposed on automotive software and hardware produced in China. These restrictions, which have been in place since January 2025, categorically forbid the utilization of critical software and hardware components sourced from China in vehicles operating within the United States, under the pretext of national security and data security apprehensions. The prohibition on software came into effect in March 2026, with the hardware ban slated for implementation in 2029. Additionally, it is anticipated that these related restrictions will undergo further intensification over the forthcoming 12 to 18 months. Earlier, during the economic and trade discussions held between China and the United States in Paris, no agreement was achieved on matters pertaining to the automotive sector, thereby diminishing the prospects of a policy relaxation in the near future.
