US Trade Representative Greer announced that the Trump administration has no plans to modify the existing restrictions on Chinese automobile hardware and software—measures that have effectively barred Chinese automobiles from the US market. These bans were implemented by the Biden administration in January of the previous year, citing national security concerns. The software ban came into force in March, while the hardware ban is scheduled to take effect in 2029. Greer emphasized that the current administration believes these restrictions will stay in place, and that certain countries may encounter challenges if they attempt to set up production facilities in the US. Furthermore, while the Canadian government has agreed to permit the annual import of 49,000 Chinese automobiles, Greer noted that it remains uncertain whether these vehicles will be allowed to cross into the US and how associated issues will be addressed.
