On October 21, 2026, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) unveiled a fresh proposal, demanding that Apple cut the fees associated with its contactless payment technology and lift technical barriers to diminish its dominance in this sector, thereby enabling other payment services to go head-to-head with Apple Pay. The CMA emphasized that this new initiative is poised to bring down access costs for developers and dismantle technical hurdles. At present, the proposal is open for public feedback until November 17 and remains pending implementation. In response, Apple argued that its current NFC technology and secure element are already equipped to facilitate contactless payments, and it should not be compelled to embrace technical solutions that offer less robust privacy and security assurances.
