A notice issued by the National Film Administration has, for the very first time, clearly outlined the defining characteristics of VR films. This move is facilitating their transformation from being mere cultural and tourism attractions within science and technology museums to evolving into fully-fledged, industrialized film and television productions. The VR film sector is now poised to seize fresh opportunities. Presently, VR films are undergoing a paradigm shift, transitioning from passive story-watching experiences for audiences to immersive journeys where viewers actively participate in the narrative. Since 2025, more than 200 VR films have received approval for production, with approximately 50 of them obtaining licenses for public screening. Looking ahead, VR films are expected to make a more significant foray into cinemas, infusing the Chinese film industry with renewed vigor and dynamism.
