Apple has revealed to federal law enforcement agencies that the true identities of at least two users who employed the privacy-centric 'Hide My Email' feature have been uncovered. This particular feature, exclusively available to iCloud+ paid subscribers, enables users to create anonymous email addresses and automatically forwards emails to their primary inbox. Apple has assured users that it will not access the content of these forwarded emails. Nevertheless, court filings indicate that this feature does not offer complete immunity from law enforcement tracking.

During FBI investigations into cases of intimidation and probes by Homeland Security Investigations into identity fraud, Apple furnished records pertaining to the users in question. These records included their full names, actual email addresses, and details of their anonymous email accounts. Despite Apple's emphasis on end-to-end encryption for the majority of its iCloud services, it appears that certain user information remains within reach of law enforcement, underscoring the inherent limitations of email privacy safeguards. An Apple spokesperson has declined to comment on the issue.
