At one point, Apple explored the creation of brightly colored charging case prototypes for the inaugural generation of AirPods. These prototypes showcased color schemes reminiscent of the iPhone 5c, boasting exterior hues such as pink and yellow. While the interiors of the charging cases and the earbuds themselves stayed pristine white, this design choice created a striking contrast compared to the versions that were eventually mass-produced. The prototypes were intended to harmonize with the color options available for the iPhone 7, with considerations for black, gold, pink, and red variants. There was even a proposal to introduce a purple version, designed to pair with an unreleased purple iPhone 7 model. Nevertheless, due to the need for cost management, Apple ultimately decided to release only the white version.
