Verily, a life sciences subsidiary under Google's parent company Alphabet, has submitted an application to release 64 million male Culex pipiens mosquitoes—infected with Wolbachia bacteria—across California and Florida in the United States. The initiative aims to curb populations of southern house mosquitoes, which are known vectors for diseases such as the West Nile virus. Since these male mosquitoes do not feed on blood, their mating with uninfected female mosquitoes will result in non-viable fertilized eggs, thereby gradually reducing mosquito numbers in the targeted regions. The application is currently under review by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
