In April 2026, Canonical unveiled the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Long-Term Support) version, codenamed "Resolute Raccoon". This release comes with an impressive 10-year technical support window, encompassing 5 years of standard security updates. Users can extend this support to a full decade by subscribing to Ubuntu Pro. Initially, this version was exclusively available for fresh installations. However, with the impending end-of-life for certain older Ubuntu versions, Canonical is now progressively rolling out upgrade options to existing users.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is powered by the Linux 7.0 kernel and incorporates the GNOME 50 desktop environment. Notably, it features core components crafted in the Rust programming language, a strategic move to bolster system security and performance. Beyond these enhancements, the new version also elevates AI capabilities, supports TPM (Trusted Platform Module) full-disk encryption for heightened data protection, and optimizes graphics and computing performance. Its versatility makes it well-suited for both desktop and server deployments.
