In May 2026, a team from the College of Engineering at the University of Florida successfully developed the world's first DNA-guided CRISPR gene editing system, with the findings published in Nature Biotechnology. This innovation overturns the traditional RNA-guided approach long relied upon in the field of gene editing. By using DNA as the guiding sequence, it significantly enhances editing safety and precision while reducing costs. Experimental data shows that the new technology reduces off-target effects by several orders of magnitude, lowers the preparation cost of DNA guides by approximately 60% compared to RNA, and extends their stability at room temperature by threefold.
