On December 20, 2025, history was made as "SuperCarbon-1", the world's inaugural commercial supercritical carbon dioxide power generation unit, officially commenced commercial operations at Shougang Shuigang Group, situated in Liupanshui, Guizhou. This momentous event signifies the leap of supercritical carbon dioxide power generation technology from the confines of laboratories to real-world commercial applications.
This innovative technology harnesses the power of supercritical carbon dioxide by heating and pressurizing liquid carbon dioxide to a supercritical state, which then drives a generator to produce electricity. The results are remarkable: power generation efficiency soars by over 85%, net power generation increases by more than 50%, site requirements are halved, and the unit has the capacity to generate an additional 70 million-plus kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
