For an extended period, the 'Phone Link' feature in Windows 11 has been plagued by a serious memory leak problem, as reported by numerous users. According to their feedback, the background service associated with this feature can, in severe instances, consume dozens of gigabytes of RAM. This excessive memory usage often leads to system slowdowns or, in extreme cases, renders the system virtually unusable.

The root cause of this issue primarily lies in a background component known as 'Cross Device Service.' This component is tasked with managing cross-device interactions between the computer and the connected phone. However, when errors arise, it can become trapped in an infinite loop, resulting in a continuous and unchecked increase in memory consumption.

User reports suggest that this problem can be traced back to as early as 2023. Initially manifesting as occasional glitches, it has since evolved into a persistent and widespread phenomenon. Some users have reported memory usage soaring beyond 90%, with additional impacts on network bandwidth.

Despite these widespread reports, Microsoft has yet to officially acknowledge the issue or release a dedicated fix patch. Instead, the company has only recommended that users keep their systems and applications updated or disable the relevant component via the Task Manager. Unfortunately, these measures have proven to be of limited effectiveness.

Consequently, some users have been compelled to disable or entirely uninstall the Phone Link feature as a precautionary measure to prevent memory exhaustion and ensure system stability.
