SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son recently publicly questioned Elon Musk's vision of building AI data centers in space, arguing that the economic benefits of such a move would be limited. According to The Wall Street Journal, Son questioned the significance of the plan when addressing Japanese investors. He pointed out that electricity accounts for only about 7% of the operational costs of data centers, with hardware costs such as chips being the major expense. Son emphasized that the outcome of the AI race will depend on computing power on Earth, not on electricity savings in space.
