Following a significant outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) last week, which caused a disruption in Signal's services, Signal President Meredith Whittaker clarified the reasons behind the encrypted communication app's reliance on infrastructure provided by major tech firms. She pointed out that, despite facing criticism from the likes of Musk, Signal currently has no practical alternatives. This is because a substantial portion of its operational expenses goes towards renting servers and hardware from large tech entities such as AWS, a practice deeply ingrained in the industry's ecosystem and reflecting the current limitations in self-hosted or decentralized infrastructure options for high-scale, secure communication platforms.
