Recently, a collaborative team led by Professor Fu Shiyao and Professor Gao Chunqing from the School of Optics and Photonics at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), joined by Associate Professor Zhou Zhiyuan from the University of Science and Technology of China, Assistant Professor Yijie Shen from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and Academician Andrew Forbes from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, published an extensive review article titled 'Orbital Angular Momentum Tailoring Toward High-Dimensional Photonics' in the prestigious optics journal Photonics Insights.
This review offers a systematic overview of the latest progress in high-dimensional structured light field manipulation technologies. It covers a range of construction methods, including OAM optical combs, classical non-separable states, and hyper-degree-of-freedom beams. Additionally, it delves into novel phenomena in nonlinear and quantum optics. Looking ahead, the study anticipates future application directions for high-dimensional OAM light fields in areas such as laser communication, lidar systems, and quantum information processing, while also analyzing key challenges and potential development pathways.
The Beijing Institute of Technology is credited as the primary completing institution for this research. Professor Fu Shiyao serves as the first author, with Lu Ruitao, a doctoral student set to graduate in 2024, as the first student author. The co-corresponding authors include Professor Fu Shiyao, Associate Professor Zhou Zhiyuan, and Assistant Professor Yijie Shen. This research has received support from the Original Exploration Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Key Program of the Youth Science Fund of the Beijing Natural Science Foundation.
