The GeForce RTX 5090, NVIDIA's forthcoming flagship graphics card, is renowned for its formidable performance capabilities, albeit at the cost of substantial power consumption. By default, it employs a 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 power connector, a choice that has ignited debates regarding connector safety. Nevertheless, modding enthusiasts have ingeniously devised a method to power the RTX 5090 using a conventional 8-pin PCIe power connector.

The RTX 5090 is equipped with an impressive 21,760 CUDA cores and 32GB of GDDR7 memory, demanding a hefty 575W of power. NVIDIA officially advocates for the use of a 600W 12V-2x6 connector or four 8-pin PCIe power cables to meet its power requirements. However, tests have revealed that the RTX 5090 can also operate on three 8-pin power cables (providing a combined 450W), albeit with a slight performance dip of around 5%.

To mitigate the safety apprehensions surrounding the 16-pin connector, certain enthusiasts have taken a hands-on approach by directly soldering the power supply wires onto the graphics card's PCB. This physical modification effectively prevents burnout, offering a robust solution to the connector's safety concerns. Moreover, some have gone a step further by implementing dual-connector load balancing. They achieve this by soldering a secondary power connector themselves, thereby distributing the power load and diminishing the likelihood of a single connector overheating and melting.
