Tom's Hardware recently conducted specialized testing on the four major laptop chip camps—Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, and Apple—comparing performance differences between plugged-in and battery modes. The tested models encompass flagship processors from each camp, including Intel Core Ultra X9 388H, Ultra 7 258V, Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme, Apple M5 Max, and AMD Ryzen AI 9 465, Ryzen AI 7 445. The test results revealed that the Apple M5 Max delivered the best performance, with less than 1% performance fluctuation in battery mode, offering virtually no difference in user experience between plugged-in and battery operation. The Intel platform ranked second in overall stability, showing only minor fluctuations in benchmark scores and transcoding tasks. The Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme exhibited erratic performance with inconsistent scheduling logic. AMD ranked last overall, with the Acer Swift Go 16 AI experiencing a staggering 56.25% performance drop in battery mode, while HP models with the same architecture also suffered over 15% performance loss. Industry analysts attribute these disparities to differences in OEM firmware and power management strategies among manufacturers, noting that AMD platforms inherently offer weaker battery life and that mainstream ultrabook manufacturers invest insufficiently in system optimization.
