SpaceX agreed to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio, adding a planned low-band coverage layer to Starlink Mobile’s integrated satellite and terrestrial network.

SpaceX agreed to acquire Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio, adding a planned low-band coverage layer to its Starlink Mobile satellite and terrestrial network. SpaceX said the licenses cover up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum and would complement its 2 GHz mid-band resources. The transaction remains subject to FCC approval and customary closing conditions; financial terms were not disclosed. Grain acquired the portfolio from T-Mobile in August 2026.

In its October 8 announcement, SpaceX outlined a flexible architecture combining satellite-to-mobile connectivity with terrestrial deployment. The company said its 2 GHz spectrum would provide capacity, while the new 800 MHz layer would improve coverage and signal penetration into buildings. SpaceX also said most existing mobile devices already support the band. The announcement did not specify a terrestrial rollout schedule, infrastructure partners, service pricing or a commercial launch date.

The agreement follows a separate FCC authorization for SpaceX’s next-generation direct-to-device satellite system. SpaceX said that approval permits a 15,000-satellite constellation optimized for 2 GHz operation and claimed its planned V2 Starlink Mobile satellites would deliver more than 100 times the bandwidth of the current generation. That figure is a company performance projection. The constellation authorization and the pending 800 MHz license transfer are separate regulatory actions.

Starlink Mobile — Key Developments
• Spectrum: Nationwide license portfolio covering up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band.
• Seller: Grain Management, which acquired the portfolio from T-Mobile in August 2026.
• Status: Agreement signed; FCC approval and customary closing conditions remain outstanding.
• Architecture: Planned integration of satellite-to-mobile service and terrestrial radio coverage.
• Complementary bands: 800 MHz for the coverage layer; 2 GHz for mobile capacity.
• Satellite expansion: Separate FCC authorization for a 15,000-satellite D2D constellation; deployment remains ahead.
• Undisclosed: Purchase price, terrestrial rollout schedule and commercial service pricing.

“One network that provides Americans with a reliable service indoors, outdoors, in cellular dead zones, and everywhere in between,” SpaceX stated in its announcement.

Analysis

The significant development is SpaceX’s explicit plan to combine its satellite constellation with terrestrial deployment. Its announcement assigns different roles to the spectrum layers: coverage and building penetration at 800 MHz, and capacity at 2 GHz. This extends the stated Starlink Mobile architecture beyond supplemental satellite coverage into an integrated mobile network.

The indoor-service claim needs to be read in that architectural context. SpaceX describes a combined ground-and-space network; the announcement does not demonstrate reliable satellite-only reception inside buildings. Similarly, handset support for an existing frequency band does not establish compatibility with every planned Starlink Mobile service or radio configuration.

The acquisition also builds on SpaceX’s earlier spectrum agreements with EchoStar. The FCC approved those license-transfer transactions in May 2026, providing a regulatory foundation for its next-generation D2D strategy. The next milestones for the Grain transaction are FCC consent, closing and disclosure of the terrestrial deployment plan. Spectrum ownership and constellation authorization establish permissions and resources; they do not establish a completed nationwide network.
