On Saturday, July 4 (local time), Micron Technology formally initiated the expansion of its factory in Hiroshima, located in western Japan. This ambitious project, backed by a total investment of 1.5 trillion yen (equivalent to roughly $9.3 billion), is geared towards manufacturing cutting-edge memory chips, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), to cater to the burgeoning demand propelled by advancements in AI technology. HBM plays a pivotal role in NVIDIA's AI processors, and the factory is slated to commence shipments in the latter half of 2028. In recent times, Micron, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix have all unveiled their strategies to bolster their production capacities. Earlier this week, SK Hynix disclosed its intention to invest 80 trillion won (around $51.46 billion) in constructing a new NAND memory chip factory in Cheongju, South Korea.
