STMicroelectronics unveiled a transformation plan on Thursday, aiming to retrain long-serving employees and introduce robots at aging chip factories to tackle industry challenges and prevent plant closures. The company has partnered with Oversonic Robotics to deploy customized humanoid robots, RoBee, across its global factories for logistics and production processes. This move is designed to enhance efficiency, reduce labor costs, and transition employees to higher-skilled roles. Since October 2024, STMicroelectronics has initiated a restructuring plan, planning to lay off 5,000 employees, with smooth progress in France but obstacles in Italy. The company emphasized that the integration of humanoid robots is a crucial step in its automation strategy, with over a hundred units set to be deployed in the coming years.
