On July 18th, Meta Platforms (META.O) declared that it would not adhere to the Code of Conduct aimed at aligning with Europe's newly introduced AI regulations. In a public statement, Joel Kaplan, Meta's Head of Global Affairs, expressed criticism, stating that while these guidelines are designed to facilitate compliance with the AI Act, they impose an 'excessive regulatory burden,' introducing legal ambiguities for model developers and implementing measures that exceed the scope of the Act. Earlier this month, the EU unveiled the Code of Conduct as a voluntary framework intended to aid companies in establishing processes to comply with the intricate AI Act. The guidelines encompass copyright protection, transparency requirements for advanced AI models, and the need for developers to provide documentation explaining the functional characteristics of AI models. Companies that sign and adhere to the Code will be granted additional legal safeguards against accusations of breaching the AI Act.
