When iOS 27 ships later this month, dual-iPhone users will have Apple's most technically elegant answer yet to a problem that has plagued them for years — but whether they can actually use it on day one will come down to a single question: has their carrier launched the backend infrastructure to make it work?
That infrastructure is the companion eSIM, and it is the engineering story at the center of iPhone Handoff, a feature Apple buried on a feature-list slide at WWDC 2026 in June and then left entirely unexplained until this week.
A MacRumors forum member who goes by pdfu shared a demonstration video using two simulated iPhones running inside Xcode 27's Device Hub, giving the first clear look at a system that is less "Apple magic" and more "carrier infrastructure on a deadline."

The setup lives in Settings > Cellular, where a user designates one iPhone as the primary device and a second as the companion. From that point, the technical work shifts to the carrier's side of the system.
Apple's approach depends on the GSMA's Remote SIM Provisioning standard — specifically the GSMA's SGP.22 consumer eSIM standard that governs how consumer eSIM profiles are provisioned and managed — to issue what Apple calls a companion eSIM to the second device. On the carrier's end, a server called the SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation Plus) remotely delivers the companion profile to the secondary iPhone's Local Profile Assistant, the software layer that manages eSIM credentials on the device.
Both profiles share the same phone number — the MSISDN, in carrier terminology — but only one actively routes calls and text messages at any given moment. When a user moves to the companion device, the carrier's network registers that device as the active endpoint and redirects inbound traffic there. Switching requires confirming with a double-click of the side button on the source device, which functions as a security measure preventing unauthorized number transfers.
The primary iPhone retains exclusive control over all cellular settings throughout. Location sharing, including what Find My contacts see, updates dynamically to reflect whichever device is currently using the active number.
Understanding what iPhone Handoff is requires being precise about what it is not.

For iPhone Handoff to work, a carrier must build and deploy companion-eSIM provisioning into its SM-DP+ backend systems — the same server infrastructure that already issues standard eSIM profiles during device setup. Companion-eSIM provisioning is a distinct use case from standard eSIM activation, and carriers that have not yet deployed support for it cannot issue the companion profile regardless of what iOS 27 can request.
T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are reported as among the first carriers expected to offer compatibility. However, independent sources indicate the necessary servers on those carriers have not yet been confirmed as operational as of publication. Apple has not published a full list of carrier partners for this feature.
This is the same dynamic that shaped the initial rollout of eSIM itself when Apple introduced it in the iPhone XS in 2018: the technology was ready on the device, but only 14 carriers across 10 countries supported it on day one. Companion-eSIM provisioning is a newer capability, and the rollout will be paced by carrier readiness rather than iOS ship dates.
