Meta, in partnership with Booz Allen, has successfully deployed a tailored version of the open-source Llama 3.2 model to the International Space Station, naming the project Space Llama. This groundbreaking endeavor seeks to evaluate the efficacy of onboard AI in bolstering space-based scientific research. Leveraging the publicly accessible full model weights of Llama, the system operates on standalone hardware without requiring an internet connection, thereby enhancing data security and minimizing latency. By integrating Booz Allen's A2E2 framework with HP space computers, Space Llama significantly curtails inference time for specific tasks through a compact, energy-efficient system. Furthermore, it generates text and images, manages mixed data types, and grants researchers seamless access to pertinent literature.
